NOTICE “Botanical Garden Development and Management”Training Course

The development of botanical gardens in Asia over recent years has shown a remarkable period of growth, but they face many problems and bigger challenges than they ever. This is particularly true and more complex for those botanical gardens in developing countries. The “Botanical Garden Development & Management” training course is intended to focus on and help professionals involved in botanic garden and arboretum management from the Asian developing countries. This eight-week course is organized by International Association of Botanic Gardens (IABG) Asian Division, IABG, Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden and South China Botanical Garden. 

Course objectives

  Ÿ To coordinate, promote and support the development and management of Asian Botanical Gardens

  Ÿ To help build regional capacity and expertise at a time of rapid global change

  Ÿ To strengthen botanical garden networking among the Asian developing countries and promote exchange of professional skills and ideas 

This course includes

  Two weeks of lectures and discussion, instructed by a group of internationally renowned experts, cover the origin, current status and future dimensions of botanic gardens; diverse roles of botanic gardens in living collections, capacity-building, plant diversity conservation, herbarium management, botanical garden management, horticulture, and public education.

  A one-week field excursion to Tianmu Mountain to gain practical experience on plant identification, field survey and plant taxonomy.

  A week of visits to several leading Chinese botanical gardens.

  Four weeks optional internship allows the trainees to work and gain hands-on experience at Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden. 

 

Dates: September 8th to November 7th, 2016

Language: the course will be delivered in English

  Ÿ   Botanical Garden Staff from Asian developing countries

  Ÿ   Fluent in English

  Ÿ   Complete Application Form

  Ÿ   Two recommendation letters

  Ÿ   Resumé  

Please email Application Form, two recommendation letters and resumé to huangshubo@csnbgsh.cn before June 30th, 2016. Candidates will be selected by a joint committee of both the IABG Office and Chenshan Botanical Garden. The admitted trainees will receive an official notification.  

Financial assistance on a competitive base, offered by Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, may fully or partially cover the expense of international travel, domestic travel inside China, accommodation and meals. Applicants seeking financial assistance should include a formal letter specifying their financial needs in the application package.
