Botanical Garden Development and Management

Training Course

Oct 12th to Oct 31st, 2020

Statement

The on-site training is organized assuming the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Pandemic is contained and the visa and international flights are available. If the situation is not allowed to have the training during Oct 12th to Oct 31st, 2020, we may hold an online training instead of on-site training or keep the trainee places until further notice. By applying this training, the applicants agrees to read the statement carefully and keep flexibility to changes of the training planning. 

 

Course objectives

1. To coordinate, promote and support the development and management of Asian botanical gardens

2. To help build regional capacity and expertise at a time of rapid global change

3. To strengthen botanical garden networking among the Asian developing countries and promote exchange of professional skills and ideas

This course includes

1. Theory classes: mission& development of botanic gardens, plant exhibition, botanical garden design, flower production development, flower design, genetic issues in plant conservation, taxonomy, herbarium& seed bank, education theory, customer service and marketing

2. Guided tours: nursery, greenhouses, children’s garden, research center, rose garden, plant record management, vegetable garden, herbarium, etc.

3. Field trips: plant identification, specimen making, field survey methods and techniques

4. Visits: top botanic gardens, traditional parks, natural history museum

5. Trainee duties: self-introduction with PPT, International Ethnic Botanical Exhibition, teaching assistant, final group report

Application eligibility

1. Botanical staff (young leaders, deputy director, head of collections, horticulturist in charge of a collection, etc.) from Asian developing countries, see appendix

2. Fluent in English, the course will be delivered in English

3. Complete application form

4. Two recommendation letters

5. A report on your botanic garden (with photos, maximum 5 pages)

6. Resumé

Financial assistance

1. Offered by Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China and Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden

2. Cover the expense of tuition, domestic travel inside China, accommodation and workday meals

3. Applicants seeking financial assistance of international travel should send a formal letter specifying their financial needs to Ms. Huang huangshubo@csnbgsh.cn
